Masters Athletics 2012

South of England Masters Open Meet, Pickett’s Lock,
Sunday 19 February 2012

This was the first South of England meeting, and was combined with the VAC Indoor Championships. I raced 60m and 200m, which is why my coverage doesn’t start until my own racing was finished.

SCVAC Indoor Championships, Pickett’s Lock,
Sunday 11 March 2012

A big afternoon of good events. I raced twice myself (2 medals too!) and was at times quite grateful for the long gaps in the programme. It’s also the reason I wasn’t able to shoot photos of every event, of course.

BMAF British Masters Indoor Championships, Lee Valley, London,
Saturday/Sunday 17/18 March 2012

For me this is always a huge weekend. These two galleries are made up from less than half of the material I actually shot during the weekend! I raced twice, winning a 60m and 200m B race. Nice to be winning, but it’ll be nicer when I’m back contending for medals in the A races. I was also the only official photographer working on both days. Please remember I can only be in one place at one time, and have to make tough calls sometimes about what events to concentrate on.

“VaultLondon 2012” Sutton Arena,
Sunday 25 March 2012

This wasn’t a Masters event, although a British Masters M45 record was set during the day. It was a huge demonstration of skill and enthusiasm by pole vaulters aged (literally) from 10 to 70. Great organisation by Team Polestar and my buddy Allan Williams. Quite one of the best events I’ve attended for a long time!

I’ve split the photos into two sections, roughly half in each. I was reluctant just to trim the stuff down to a single gallery.

BMAF British Masters Road Relays Sutton Park, Birmingham,
Saturday 12 May 2012

This was the first time I’d covered this great event. A chance to see the best Masters road racers in the country in action, on a warm sunny day, on a great course.

I have a photo of very, very nearly everyone who raced. For the few omissions, I apologise.

BMAF British Masters Track and Field Pentathlons, Oxford
Sunday 17 June 2012

These are hotly contested competitions, giving the multi-events people a warm up before the BMAF Decathlons later in the summer. I very nearly achieved my aim of getting a shot of everyone taking part, in every event they did, but it was just too hard in a few cases!

BMAF British Masters Championships, Moorways Stadium, Derby
21 and 22 July 2012

The Championships were blessed with great weather, despite a dire summer. They even saw me return to running half decent times in my own event.
There were, I think, four world age group records over the weekend. I shot something like 2,000 photos, which have been edited down to the selection posted below.

BMAF British Masters Decathlon and Heptathlon Championships,
Oxford, Saturday 4 August and Sunday 5 August 2012

The Championships this year incorporated the biennial GB/USA Challenge. Saturday was a day of warm, sunny weather with occasional showers. Sunday was given over to torrential showers and a few sunny spells. Not that the decathletes and heptathletes noticed, of course. They’re made of sterner stuff!

The event was so large that on Day 2, it needed to run the pole vault and javelin at two separate venues, 10 miles apart. I’ve not yet mastered the art of being in more than one place at a time, so I regret I have no photos of the events held at Abingdon. I stayed at Horspath Stadium so that I could also cover the BMAF 10,000 metres track championships held there that day.

BMAF British Masters 10,000 metres Track Championships
Oxford, Sunday 5 August 2012

Bedevilled by heavy downpours and the briefest of bright spells, these races, and the race-walking championship, were hotly contested events.
